Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
