EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
