Matteo Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
