The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
