Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then located many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to solve the case" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important political figure stated the vandalism made him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
